Did you know that your education can make you a hero? By earning an online fire science degree, you’re one step closer to saving someone’s life or stopping a tragedy from happening. And while it may not be the highest paying career on the books, many people find it very rewarding.

What does an online fire science degree teach you?

These degrees teach fire safety, protection, and hazardous materials handling. Courses show students how to manage and analyze various factors before, during, and after the blaze. In other words, it’s a tough job but somebody has to do it. And that somebody needs vital training to get it done.

Why is that important?

You should be proud of yourself for pursuing an online fire science degree. After all, you’ll be one of the first on the scene after a major disaster. Your knowledge could help save a life. In fact, fire scientists often help troubleshoot to prevent future tragedies from happening.

Trained pros play an important role in many crime scene investigations, too. Their knowledge of codes, EMT basics, and rescue methods is critical. However, their average pay means some might have to sacrifice “the good life” to make an impact.

FACT: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that graduate-level fire investigators only earn a $60,000 salary. Meanwhile, firefighters in New Jersey rake in around $75,000 a year.

3 common jobs for people with an online fire science degree

You can get a job as a firefighter, investigator, or inspector when you earn a degree in fire science. However, the pay range and responsibilities can vary widely with each position. Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect:

  1. Firefighter – The first responders to fire emergencies, responsible for suppressing flames, leading building rescues, and providing on-site medical care. NOTE: Some firefighters are asked to respond to emergencies that don’t involve flames, such as car accidents and elevator mishaps.
  2. Inspector – A primary line of defense against preventable accidents, responsible for ensuring safe building layouts and materials. NOTE: Many fire inspectors also monitor/install sprinkler systems and alarms to ensure safety and compliance.
  3. Investigator – An important expert on the scene of most arson crime zones, responsible for collecting evidence and eyewitness testimonies to solve a mystery. NOTE: Most fire investigators often work with forensics to help figure out the origin of a fire.

There are bachelor’s degree programs for fire scientists, as well. Those programs help online grads advance into administrative positions or offer consulting services. So, be sure to talk to your admissions counselor for more information about the educational requirements.

The takeaway

Earning an online fire science degree is a big deal, so use it wisely. If you study hard and get the right job, you could be the one who saves a person’s life.
